Ed on a MAC!!!

First off. I don’t want to get into a debate on Macs vs Windows PC. l_2048_1536_18364b9d-ce60-4344-91d7-bf60697bdda6I’ve been a Windows user since Windows 3.1 (I’ve had Windows before that, just didn’t use it much) and a Linux user since Slackware 3.2. Even between Windows and Linux, I think they each have their place. Mac’s just feel foreign. For instance. I get this new 27” imac on my desk for troubleshooting an issue (just temporarily). There is three of us who can’t figure out how to turn the damn thing on. The power button is hidden 2”x 2” up from the lower left corner on the back of the monitor. That’s a stupid place for a power button.

So while I’m trying to figure this thing out, my co-worker took these picks and posted them on his blog (Chad’s blog is linked).

This thing is a monster, the screen is huge, and while it looks cool, the keyboard and mouse feel just absolutely dainty. If I sneeze, I may break them.

So I want to figure out some basic stuff. Like the number of procs and type. I open a terminal window and do a “cat /proc/cpuinfo”. Turns out BSD and Macs do not support this. Takes a few minutes to find it in the finder.

The main reason I have it is because Entourage isn’t playing so well with Exchange 2007. The PCs just work. Macs not so much. My first impressions are: okay it’s pretty, but it can’t do simple stuff like join the domain, or get corporate email very well. It’s not looking so good. Plus the software library for the Mac pales in comparison.

    Ahhhhh come on Ed. Give it 6 months and you'll be posting Apps that you've made...it's that easy. I will say...I haven't had to rebuild my G3 sawtooth since it's existence in 1997. I think I rebuild my PC every friggin' 6 months.

    I lost the mac on my desk after a few weeks. Once I made my documentation, it went to the graphics department. I do have to say, it was fun to play with, but it was more of a distraction. Too many people came to my desk to play with it.

My new sax partner (Part 2)

(Part one is here ) For those of you still with me.. Here are the details. Playing low notes are a bit hard. They do offer a low note enhancer that ships with the kit. Please note this is for the saxophone. Here is the support for the bell. It does not hold the neck of my sax very well. In order to get the support in without hitting my keys, I had to put it where only one row of the pegs are inserted. This doesn’t provide much stability, but does work. The bell support reaches in and pushes the low B key open. That makes for some interesting sounding notes. Now the whole sax seems to need be shifter higher than the case was designed for because of the shape of the neck. This creates another issue. The padding from the top will actually catch the octave key, and hold it open. There is one last issue with it. Venus De Milo’s Butt

You’ve already seen the front. We took a day trip to France. While we were there, we went to the Louvre. It was the express version. The Louvre is an eyesore. They took this perfectly good palace, and built a hideous pyramid. I guess it’s supposed to be futuristic, but it’s just plain ugly. On a good note, you can mostly see through it, and see the beautiful palace that’s behind it. While we were in Paris, we did the typical touristy things you’d do in Paris. We saw Notre Dame, Eifel Tower, Louvre, and the Arch de Triumph. When we took a cab to the Arch, I think I offended the cab driver by pronouncing “Triumph” in American English. He  kept saying what? When I pulled out my handy Rick Steve’s London guide (using the day trip to Paris section) and pointed to the name.. He kindly said, “it iz called ark dee tree-omph”.
